The Fallacy of Chak Au (Re: Richmond MP-elect Chak Au to stay on as city councillor, 6May2025)

Dear Editor,

Richmond MP-elect Chak Au has decided to retain his Richmond City Council seat despite being elected federally, citing the cost of a by-election as a primary concern. While the intention to save taxpayer dollars may appear commendable, it raises ethical questions about public accountability and effective governance.

Au’s argument follows the "Ends Justify the Means" fallacy — claiming that avoiding a costly by-election justifies continuing to receive a council salary while not fully performing the role. While he plans to donate the salary to charity, it distracts from the core issue: the conflict of holding two public offices effectively. Voters elected Au for local governance on Richmond City Council, not as a part-time representative juggling dual roles.

This decision sets a dangerous precedent that undermines taxpayers confidence in elected officials. In 2020, former Councillor Kelly Greene rightfully stepped down in similar circumstances and as Councillor Linda McPhail stated at that time, “I don’t think we can shortchange democracy.”

If elected officials prioritize cost-saving over dedication to their oath of office, public trust will be further eroded. While a by-election has a cost, democracy demands full accountability. If you don’t want the job, why run for office? Richmond residents deserve full leadership from those elected, not a compromise in representation.
